The loss of skin elasticity is one symptom of aging that many of us are all too familiar with. As we grow older, our bodies produce fewer of the ingredients that keep skin resilient and tight, resulting in sagging. Natural chemical changes in the skin, coupled with the effects of gravity, often make wrinkles and drooping skin much more noticeable. These symptoms can affect the entire face, including the upper and lower eyelids. Somewhat counterintuitively, the age-related displacement of fat and other tissue can actually make the eyelids appear swollen. When the eyes look aged, the entire face follows suit. Blepharoplasty, known in NYC as eyelid surgery, can erase some of the symptoms of aging.

The most significant benefits of blepharoplasty include the following:

  • Lifting eyelids: When administered on the upper eyelids, blepharoplasty creates a more alert, refreshed appearance. This is especially appreciated by patients who complain about always looking tired, even when they aren’t. Additionally, severe ptosis (sagging) of the eyelids can actually affect eyesight, often limiting the individual’s field of vision. Standard vision correction measures cannot address this type of visual impairment. Instead, surgical intervention is necessary. By removing the excess skin responsible for the sagging, I can open and improve the eyes.
  • Reduce bags: Bags beneath the eyes are often caused by fat deposits that collect beneath the eyes. These create a consistently puffy appearance that cannot be remedied by getting more sleep, applying cold compresses, or using other standard treatments for puffy eyes. If a patient wants to correction the look of these bags, I use very small incisions to access the underlying fat deposits. Depending on your specific anatomy, I remove or redistribute the fat and tighten the remaining skin for a smoother, refreshed look.
  • Shape the lower lash line: The lower lash line is often overlooked when taking anti-aging measures. However, as with any other area of the face, this line can sag with time, causing a droopy appearance. In severe cases, sagging may be significant enough to expose the mucosa beneath, causing chronic discomfort and ongoing eye infections. During surgery to treat this symptom, I gently raise the lower eyelid, restoring it to a youthful-looking position without making the eye appear smaller.

Although aging is a natural process, there’s no reason not to pursue options that can leave you looking fresher and younger than before. Depending on your particular concerns, eyelid surgery can produce excellent results when performed on its own or can be a wonderful complement to other facial procedures.
