Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s BOTOX®. If you’re not yet familiar with this beloved anti-aging cosmetic treatment, also known by its formal name as botulinum toxin, get ready to be amazed. It takes just a few small pinches from a needle and voilà, forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet magically fade away. You can thank your highly trained injector! While the effects are not permanent, they last long enough to make everyone take notice of your smooth, wrinkle-free skin. When BOTOX® is done right, the results can look natural and pretty incredible. Longview News-Journal’s article ”Why Botox Looks Natural on Some People and Not Others” asks the plastic surgery experts to weigh in on the do’s and don’ts of this age-defying procedure – so you can get the results you really want.

A Little Intro To BOTOX®

Once upon a time, the FDA cleared the botulinum toxin therapy for use on the face to treat fine lines and wrinkles – and changed the course of facial aesthetics forever. The popularity of this treatment has since then skyrocketed. So, what exactly is BOTOX® Cosmetic and how does it work? It is a neuromodulator mainly used to treat dynamic lines or expression lines that form with repeated muscle movements, such as smiling or frowning. Injecting BOTOX® blocks the nerve signals to these overactive muscles and temporarily relaxes them. “BOTOX® doesn’t do anything to the wrinkles whatsoever. It takes care of the muscle that causes the wrinkles and after a few days, your skin gets a chance to regenerate so the wrinkles begin to smooth out,” says Konstantin Vasyukevich, MD, top facial plastic surgeon and facelift expert in New York City. It typically takes up to a week to see the full results of BOTOX® injections, but the results can usually last three to six months.

What Makes BOTOX® Look Unnatural?

When done correctly by an experienced injector, BOTOX® is considered a safe and effective cosmetic treatment. It can deliver beautiful, natural-looking results. However, if injected in the wrong muscle, unevenly, or over-injected, the outcome can be unsatisfactory. It is often better to just relax the muscles of the face with BOTOX® than completely paralyze them. “Some people are very expressive with strong facial movement, and others are less expressive. BOTOX® should move you into the category of less expressive, but when you’re surprised, you still look surprised, and when you’re angry, you still look angry,” Dr. Konstantin explains.

What happens if you get BOTOX® injections and feel something is a little off? Unfortunately, the options are limited. In some cases, it is possible to correct an imbalance like an asymmetric brow by injecting more BOTOX®. In other instances the only recourse is to wait for the effects to fade away on their own. This can usually take three to four months.

How To Get BOTOX Results That Look Natural?

BOTOX® injections can be costly ($600-$1,000 per treatment) and when done properly can make us feel great about how we look. It can have a truly positive effect for our self-confidence. So, how can we make sure to get the results we want? There are a few important steps to follow. Choosing an experienced, board-certified injector is imperative. “Your BOTOX® will be done right as long as your provider has proper training,” Dr. Konstantin says.

Communicating with your injector about your goals, expectations and what you liked or disliked about your last BOTOX® procedure is highly recommended. Dr. Konstantin also suggests starting your injections slowly, especially if you are new to this treatment. You can always add more later on, but over-injected BOTOX® cannot be undone – at least not quickly. If you’re not sure exactly how much you need, you can tell your injector “I’m starting out and I’m not sure I’m going to like it. Can you do something subtle that you’re sure will look good so I can get an idea of what it’s like?” An experienced provider will take into consideration the patient’s facial structure, muscles and expressions to determine the most suitable technique.

If you’re considering getting BOTOX®, why not dive in and give it a try? There’s a good reason why it is one of the most popular and highly-requested non-surgical treatments. These injections are a quick, simple, and effective way to help both women and men look naturally younger and refreshed. And, if it turns out BOTOX® is not quite your cup of tea? No worries, the effects are not permanent. And, if you love it? Hold on to your wonderful injector. Like with a good hairdresser, it’s a gift to find someone who truly understands what you want and like and can make you look like a million dollars.
