When a TikTok video with nearly a million likes claims that we can make fine lines and wrinkles practically disappear by only applying face tape nightly for a week, one has to wonder, is it too good to be true? The results are surprisingly impressive and are the reason face taping has emerged as one of the most popular new anti-aging trends. The secret lies in strategically placing tape on the face at night to prevent facial muscles from moving and therefore stopping new wrinkles from forming. While this TikTokers ‘miraculous’ solution to a smooth appearance seems like a no-brainer, not everyone is so enthusiastic to jump on this newest craze.

In this SHAPE Magazine’s article, top facial plastic surgeons give their take on face taping and unanimously agree that the short-term benefits are not worth the possible long-term risks. While face taping can temporarily smooth out lines and wrinkles, it can also damage the skin barrier, cause redness and irritation and possibly give the opposite effect of strengthening muscle resistance over time. As Dr. Konstantin points out, face taping is meant to be a “short-term solution” and not to be used daily, but in “moderation.” He says, “Face taping will give you the instant results you desire for the day, but it cannot alter the fine lines and wrinkles on a person’s face the way botox can.”

Ultimately, there will always be new up-and-coming beauty trends, promising us incredible results, such as face taping, but it is up to us to see beyond the hype and do what is best for our skin and our faces. Facial plastic surgeons agree, there is a good reason why using sunscreen, retinol and Botox have continued to be the gold-standard in preventative anti-aging.
