According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, Botox and dermal filler procedures are the two fastest growing cosmetic treatments over the last decade. Dermal fillers and Botox offer similar solutions for wrinkles and can be a path to more youthful looking skin. There are differences among the treatments.

Botox injections work on muscles to reduce wrinkles while fillers operate to create volume to “plump up” sagging skin and wrinkles.

1. Juvederm

This dermal filler is used most commonly to target lines around the mouth. Results from injections of this hyaluronic acid can last from six to nine months.

2. Restylane or Radiesse

These injectable substances are also hyaluronic acid-based fillers but Radiesse contains microspheres of calcium along with hyaluronic acid. Radiesse works well on severe lines and wrinkles. Radiesse treatments can last up to 18 months or longer. Restylane is also a product that can be effective in reducing wrinkles and lines in the face.

3. Botox

This type of injection works well for creases on the forehead between the eyes (frown lines) as well as crows feet (laugh lines) around the eyes. Typical results can last 3 to 6 months.
