Sometimes referred to as a “vampire facial,” platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments are among the newest and most natural facial rejuvenation methods available today. At Dr. Konstantin’s office in Manhattan, NYC, we offer PRP microneedling, so our patients can take advantage of the most advanced rejuvenation methods at our disposal. If you’re looking for an effective, nonsurgical procedure that requires little recovery time, microneedling PRP may just be the perfect solution for you.
Platelet-rich plasma is a fraction of your own blood that contains biologically active ingredients that stimulate the body’s natural growth factors, resulting in increased collagen production. This, in turn, leads to overall healthier and younger-looking skin.

As we grow older, our skin undergoes significant changes. Mostly, there is a notable decrease in collagen production, which leads to thinner, lackluster skin. Microneedling combats this concern by encouraging your skin to make more collagen. A microneedling device contains multiple tiny needles that create very small pinpricks in the surface of the skin. The skin responds to these controlled injuries by making new collagen-rich tissue. The new skin is more uniform in tone and texture, firmer, and tighter looking.
PRP takes this skin rejuvenating treatment a step further by utilizing what is essentially the most significant part of the blood when it comes to tissue rejuvenation. What is platelet-rich plasma exactly? Well, “plasma” is simply the liquid portion of blood that serves as a medium for the red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The platelets are blood cells that cause blood clotting and participate in the healing of injured tissue.
By using the patient’s own blood to release growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative cells, we effectively enable the skin to rejuvenate itself. If you’re interested in microneedling in Manhattan, you’ll be happy to know it’s not only available and effective but practically risk-free.
According to a 2008 study, skin treated with 4 microneedling sessions spaced 1 month apart produced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin 6 months after completing treatment.1 Although the research on microneedling PRP is very limited because the treatment is relatively new, patients and doctors alike have seen significant positive results. The benefits of PRP include:
This treatment’s popularity is only increasing due to its safety, convenience, and effectiveness.
You can prepare for your PRP treatment by following these simple recommendations:
In order to administer the PRP, we utilize a microneedling device. Our practice nurse, Maria, glides the device over the treatment area, where it makes a series of tiny needle injections. These allow us to disperse PRP evenly over the patient’s face and maximize the rejuvenating effect.
Recovery from this procedure is relatively minimal, allowing patients to resume their normal lives as soon as the very next day. Immediately after the treatment, expect some redness and irritation of the skin. Don’t plan any important social functions for the day of treatment. This natural response to the small “injuries” made by the needles typically subsides within the first few days following the procedure.
You’ll want to avoid sun exposure and any additional skin treatments during this time. Side effects are very rarely an issue since no foreign substance is being introduced into the body. Results are noticeable within a few days after the procedure, with the potential to last up to 6 months before a follow-up treatment is recommended.
