Like the “Wonderful World of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, TikTok is a wondrous, magical place where anything is possible and the most incredible things are awaiting for you just around the corner (or a few clicks away, if you will). We never cease to be amazed by the variety and plethora of beauty tips, fixes and elixirs to solve all our problems and make our lives better in ways we never imagined. Just when we think we’ve seen it all, there’s always that one new video that brings us back into the world of the wonderland and fuels our insatiable social media appetite.

This POPSUGAR article explores the latest TikTok phenomenon to capture our attention and have our fingers crossed (please let it be true!). What is this luscious beauty trick you may ask? TikTok user Trinh Georg declares that she can make her lips bigger by simply repeating a few strategic facial exercises, also known as face yoga. The idea is that similarly to doing a workout for the muscles of your body, you can also exercise your lips to create a plumping effect. However, can a workout for the lips truly deliver promised results or should we kiss this fantasy away? POPSUGAR asked the pout experts.

To our dismay, while facial exercises might create a slight difference in lip volume or appearance at first, the results are only temporary and quickly subside. “Increase in lip size with facial yoga mostly comes from mild swelling that occurs after the soft tissue of the lip is forcefully manipulated,” Konstantin Vasyukevich, MD, plastic surgeon and NYC facelift expert tells POPSUGAR. He also adds that any noticeable difference will fade after an hour, so ultimately, it’s not a reliable way to enhance the shape or size of your lips for the long term. Doing repeated facial exercises can also potentially result in deep wrinkles around the mouth – not exactly what we’ve bargained for.

While face yoga is not everyone’s cup of tea, what can we do to enhance our lips or at least maintain their beauty? Staying away from smoking and keeping protected from sun damage are just some of the basics of preventing collagen loss, which gives lips their volume. “Good hydration and using moisturizing lip balms can help maintain a healthy lip volume,” Dr. Vasyukevich says. For a lasting effect to make lips bigger, there’s no magic potion or “exercise”, but hyaluronic-acid based dermal fillers and lip flips can work wonders. These treatments can deliver great results with minimal downtime.
