Dr. Konstantin Filler vs Fat Grafting: Which One Is Best for You?

More and more people are finding out that thin isn’t in. Well, at least when it comes to a youthful-looking face, volume and contour are extremely important. Volume loss can happen in a few ways, like after losing significant weight or through the natural aging process. Many people wake up one day realizing that their face isn’t as youthful and tight as it used to be. Instead, they’re left looking at a slightly more hollow version of themselves, and that can often add years to their appearance. That’s where procedures addressing volume loss come into play.

So, what are the best ways to get back to a more youthful-looking version of yourself? That’s a job for the two “Fs”–filler and fat grafting. Both procedures help improve facial contour by addressing volume loss. Take a look below to learn what these procedures are, how they work, and which one is best for you.

What Is Facial Filler?

Dermal filler is an inert substance that is injected into an area to help restore volume. Filler can shape and contour areas of the face that look hollow due to volume loss. It is also a great option for treating deep wrinkles. One of the key things about filler that makes it so appealing is that it’s generally less invasive. They’re temporary, and in the case of hyaluronic acid-based fillers (the most commonly used filler), it can be dissolved with an enzyme solution.

What Is Facial Fat Grafting?

A Fat grafting procedure (or facial fat transfer) is a technique used to transfer fat from one area of the body to another through a surgical liposuction. During this procedure, the fat is removed, processed, purified, and reinjected into the new area of the body or face. This can help to improve hollow areas of the face by restoring volume. The fat can restore the contour of the temples and cheeks, fill in the under-eye hollow, and preserve the natural appearance of the face. It can also help smooth wrinkles and, in many cases, improve skin texture.

What are the Main Differences?

While both facial fat grafting and dermal fillers can help improve and rejuvenate the face by adding volume, a few major differences matter when deciding which is best for you. Hyaluronic acid filler is temporary, meaning that you would have to repeat it at least every year or two. However, this can also be an advantage. If you’re not completely satisfied with the result of the injection, all you have to do is wait it out. It is also a less invasive method. A common consideration with temporary filler is that repeatedly adding volume to address contour loss can create an overfilled or puffy look. So, caution is recommended.

By contrast, fat grafting is nearly permanent and typically doesn’t need to be repeated. However, the fat cannot be dissolved like a temporary filler, so you need to be sure of the results you’re seeking.

How Do You Know Which Option Is Best for Facial Volume Loss?

If you’re not sure which method is best for you, Dr. Konstantin always recommends starting with the temporary option first. Once you have a good idea of what you want to achieve, or you’ve reached the limits of what temporary filler can do for you, he recommends switching to something more permanent.
