If you are active on social media, chances are you’ve probably heard of this procedure called “Lip Flip”. It’s a trending lip augmentation procedure that has gained popularity much faster than Dr. Konstantin Vasyukevich, a New York City facelift plastic surgeon had expected. Before diving into why this procedure is so popular, let’s first understand what it is and its possible side effects.

What is Lip Flip?

Lip flip is a lip augmentation procedure that uses Botox to achieve the same result as lip filler. Botox is injected slightly above the upper lip to relax the muscle which turns the lip over, hence the name “lip flip”. According to Konstantin Vasyukevich MD, “as the lip everts, it shortens the distance between the upper lip and the nose which results in a fuller-looking upper lip.” Please note, lip flip only works for the upper lip.

Side Effects

With the botox injections, the biggest side effect from lip flip is the impact on muscle movement which could cause the following problems:

  1. Difficulty drinking from a straw
  2. Difficulty pronouncing certain words
  3. Unable to whistle
  4. Drooling or food falling out while eating

These side effects makes it easy to spot someone who’s had the procedure done. So you might ask, why would people choose lip flip over lip fillers and why it is so popular?

Why is Lip Flip Trending

1.The Cost

Lip fillers for upper lip alone typically cost hundreds of dollars, especially when you need a good amount to get the results you are looking for. Whereas with lip flip, you only need  a small amount of Botox to get the same result.  This cost far less money. So from an economical stand point, lip flip is a better option for some people.

2. Social Media Influence

Younger patients typically earn less than older demographic, which means lip flip is like a more appealing option for a younger patient. Since the younger generation loves documenting and sharing experiences on social media, naturally you start seeing videos or photos of people talking about lip flip and showing their results.  The more people talk about it, the more it becomes a trend that entices people to try.

So Should You Try It?

Dr. Konstantin recommends to exercise caution with lip flip because the side effects could be so visible and inconvenient. In his view for most people it would be worthwhile to spend a bit more money to get a better and more predictable result.
